I just wanted to introduce myself to all you amazing homeschooling parents. My name is Cassie, and I started Drawing Creation after discovering that drawing is such a beautiful way to connect with God’s creation and grow closer to our Saviour. I’m a homeschooling mum of 12 years with one graduated and two to go. I believe God created a young earth and that He created the universe in 6, 24 hour days. And... I’m incredibly thankful to my Saviour for saving such a wretch as me.
I’ve been seriously drawing for about 10 years, although, I remember as a child enjoying colouring in, creating art and pouring over the illustrations in children’s books, with one of my favourites being Fred’s Friends by Anna Pugh.
My go to medium is graphite. It feels like home every time I pick up a graphite pencil. Graphite is fantastic because it’s an easy medium to learn values, one of the bedrocks of creating realistic drawings. I’m most at peace out in nature and so find the vast majority of my inspiration from the natural world, particularly the bird, insect and arachnid kinds.
You may have noticed that the drawings I have created for Drawing Creation are quite different to other art curriculums. Perhaps not as much on the creative art side as other artists. That’s because at the heart of it, I’m a scientific artist not so much a creative one. I want to be as accurate as I can be when I’m drawing something so that I can become intimately acquainted with my subject.
That’s not to say that I don’t like other art forms. One of my favourite art forms is actually impressionism. I love how the impressionists used light, colour and brush strokes to create such beautiful works of art. Artists like DaVinci who could draw a few well placed lines and get a whole meaningful drawing out of it are inspirational to me. I admire the masters and find one of the most relaxing things to do is to just soak in each brush stroke and ponder on how they have used colour, lines and composition. But that is just not the field that I operate in and feel drawn to when I’m drawing.
The lessons in Drawing Creation aim to teach your children (& yourself!) realistic drawing skills so that they can then take that into whatever art form they choose. You may also notice that I don’t use a lot of paint - mostly pencils and pen. That simply comes down to the fact that I don’t like mess (unless it’s charcoal) and the cleaning up process afterwards! But you are always free to do the drawing, then use paint to render it. That’s totally fine!
My goal is to teach you and your children a little bit about creation, and a little bit about art that will strengthen your faith, point your children to their Saviour and have fun in the process.
I look forward to seeing you along on the journey! Check out my socials to follow me there.
Cassie xx
